About English

English is the most widely studied second language in the world, with an estimated 1.5 billion people learning it at any given time. It is an official language in over 50 countries and the dominant language of international business, science, technology and popular culture. For learners from almost any background, English vocabulary opens doors in a way few other languages can.

The good news for learners is that English grammar, while it has its quirks, is less complex than many other languages -- there are no noun genders, the case system is minimal, and verb conjugations are relatively straightforward. Vocabulary is the main challenge, partly because English has one of the largest lexicons of any language and partly because the spelling-to-pronunciation relationship is inconsistent. Building vocabulary through varied, repeated exposure is one of the most effective ways to make progress.

Research suggests the most common 1,000 words in English cover around 75% of everyday spoken language, which means a focused vocabulary base goes a long way. Noun Town's speech recognition lets you practise pronunciation as you learn, not just reading and recognition.

How it works

You explore a virtual world and interact with objects to pick up vocabulary in context. Testing and practice run through spaced repetition and mini-games built into the world, so learning happens as part of playing rather than as a separate activity. Words you know well come back less often, words you are still working on come back more.

You can play with speech recognition to practise speaking out loud, or use selection-based input if you prefer. Speech recognition works across all 12 languages in the game. Progress shows up in the world itself -- every word you learn restores colour to part of the town.

English vocabulary is the main challenge for most learners. Noun Town focuses on building that vocabulary base through repeated, varied exposure, with speech recognition included to practise pronunciation alongside word learning.
