About French

French is an official language in 29 countries and spoken by around 300 million people worldwide. It is one of the official languages of the United Nations, the European Union and many other international organisations, which gives it practical reach well beyond tourism. For English speakers, French is one of the more approachable languages to start learning -- a large proportion of English words have French or Latin roots, which means a lot of vocabulary feels familiar even to a complete beginner.

French is widely studied for travel, for work in international organisations, for culture, and because it opens up significant parts of Europe and Africa. It is an official language across much of sub-Saharan Africa, which is worth bearing in mind if your interest extends beyond Europe.

1,000 words in French covers a wide range of everyday situations. Given the overlap with English vocabulary, those words often come faster in French than in more distant languages.

How it works

You explore a virtual world and interact with objects to pick up vocabulary in context. Testing and practice run through spaced repetition and mini-games built into the world, so learning happens as part of playing rather than as a separate activity. Words you know well come back less often, words you are still working on come back more.

You can play with speech recognition to practise speaking out loud, or use selection-based input if you prefer. Speech recognition works across all 12 languages in the game. Progress shows up in the world itself -- every word you learn restores colour to part of the town.

French vocabulary shares a lot of roots with English, which means many words feel familiar early on. This makes it one of the more approachable languages for building a vocabulary base quickly.
