About German

German is the most widely spoken native language in Europe, with around 100 million native speakers in Germany, Austria, Switzerland and neighbouring countries. It is widely used in science, engineering, finance and academia, and is a practical language for working with or within European businesses and institutions.

For English speakers, German sits in a moderately challenging category. The grammar is more demanding than French or Spanish -- noun genders, case endings and word order rules all take time to absorb. The vocabulary, though, is more approachable than it looks at first, with many words sharing roots with English. Building vocabulary first is a sound strategy: grammar rules are easier to learn when you have words to attach them to, and a vocabulary base makes immersion in German content much more productive.

1,000 words covers a strong range of everyday German nouns and verbs and gives you a real working foundation to build structured grammar study on.

How it works

You explore a virtual world and interact with objects to pick up vocabulary in context. Testing and practice run through spaced repetition and mini-games built into the world, so learning happens as part of playing rather than as a separate activity. Words you know well come back less often, words you are still working on come back more.

You can play with speech recognition to practise speaking out loud, or use selection-based input if you prefer. Speech recognition works across all 12 languages in the game. Progress shows up in the world itself -- every word you learn restores colour to part of the town.

German grammar can be complex, but vocabulary is the most practical place to start. Building a solid word base first makes grammar study easier and more productive when you move on to it.
