About Greek

Modern Greek is spoken by around 13 million people, primarily in Greece and Cyprus. It is one of the oldest continuously spoken languages in the world, and the source of a remarkable amount of English vocabulary -- words from medicine, science, philosophy and everyday life all trace roots to ancient Greek. Once you start learning, you will recognise more than you expect.

For English speakers, Greek sits in the moderately challenging category. The Greek alphabet takes time to learn, and the grammar includes gendered nouns and a case system that feel unfamiliar at first. Building vocabulary is a practical starting point. Seeing Greek words in context during gameplay is an effective way to get comfortable with the script through repeated exposure, rather than having to study the alphabet in isolation before you can start.

Greek is studied for travel, for cultural interest, for heritage reasons, and as a foundation for understanding the roots of a huge amount of English and scientific vocabulary. 1,000 words gives you a meaningful base to work from.

How it works

You explore a virtual world and interact with objects to pick up vocabulary in context. Testing and practice run through spaced repetition and mini-games built into the world, so learning happens as part of playing rather than as a separate activity. Words you know well come back less often, words you are still working on come back more.

You can play with speech recognition to practise speaking out loud, or use selection-based input if you prefer. Speech recognition works across all 12 languages in the game. Progress shows up in the world itself -- every word you learn restores colour to part of the town.

Greek uses its own alphabet. The game displays words in Greek script throughout, so you get exposure to the letters in context as you play rather than having to learn the alphabet separately before you start.

Good for beginners

No existing knowledge needed. The game focuses mainly on vocabulary and nouns, with some basic phrases and sentences. It introduces words in small sets and only moves on once the previous ones are solid. Over 200,000 people have played Noun Town across the game series.
