About Japanese

Japanese is consistently ranked as one of the more challenging languages for English speakers. The grammar works in a different order to English, the writing system uses three scripts, and most of the vocabulary has no overlap with European languages. Around 125 million people speak it, almost all of them in Japan. A huge amount of game, anime, manga and film content is produced in Japanese, which is what draws many learners to it in the first place.

Japanese uses hiragana and katakana for everyday reading and writing, with kanji characters layered on top for a full reading ability. Noun Town focuses on vocabulary using hiragana and katakana. You will encounter some kanji in the game as words appear in context, but the game does not specifically teach kanji as a subject. Building a solid vocabulary base first is a practical approach before tackling the writing system in depth.

1,000 words in Japanese gives you a working foundation for everyday objects, actions and descriptions. It is a meaningful starting point before moving on to grammar and conversation study.

How it works

You explore a virtual world and interact with objects to pick up vocabulary in context. Testing and practice run through spaced repetition and mini-games built into the world, so learning happens as part of playing rather than as a separate activity. Words you know well come back less often, words you are still working on come back more.

You can play with speech recognition to practise speaking out loud, or use selection-based input if you prefer. Speech recognition works across all 12 languages in the game. Progress shows up in the world itself -- every word you learn restores colour to part of the town.

The game supports both romaji and Japanese characters, so you can choose how words appear on screen. Hiragana and katakana are used throughout the vocabulary. Some kanji appear in context, though the game focuses on vocabulary rather than teaching kanji specifically.

Good for beginners

No existing knowledge needed. The game focuses mainly on vocabulary and nouns, with some basic phrases and sentences. It introduces words in small sets and only moves on once the previous ones are solid. Over 200,000 people have played Noun Town across the game series.
