About Spanish

Spanish is spoken by over 500 million native speakers across more than 20 countries, making it the second most spoken language in the world by native speakers. It is consistently ranked as one of the most accessible languages for English speakers -- the vocabulary shares a lot of Latin roots with English, the writing system is familiar, and early progress often comes quickly.

Noun Town covers two distinct variants: Spain Spanish (Castilian) and Mexican Spanish (Latin American). These differ in vocabulary, pronunciation and some expressions, so it is worth choosing the one that matches where you plan to use the language. If you are learning for travel to Europe, choose Spain Spanish. If you are learning for travel, work or communication across Latin America, choose Mexican Spanish.

1,000 words in Spanish covers a wide range of everyday situations. Given the overlap with English vocabulary, many learners find early progress faster in Spanish than in more distant languages.

How it works

You explore a virtual world and interact with objects to pick up vocabulary in context. Testing and practice run through spaced repetition and mini-games built into the world, so learning happens as part of playing rather than as a separate activity. Words you know well come back less often, words you are still working on come back more.

You can play with speech recognition to practise speaking out loud, or use selection-based input if you prefer. Speech recognition works across all 12 languages in the game. Progress shows up in the world itself -- every word you learn restores colour to part of the town.

Noun Town includes both Spain Spanish and Mexican Spanish (Latin American). You choose which variant to learn, and the vocabulary and pronunciation reflect that choice. Both variants share the same core game and the same spaced repetition system.
